Teachers

Code Club Aotearoa is supporting kaiako across the country to build confidence with Digital Technologies. We want to introduce teachers to the basics of programming and encourage them to lead fun, engaging school-based code clubs

Why bring Code Club to the classroom?

In 2017, the Ministry of Education (MoE) revised the Technology learning area of the National Curriculum ‘in response to this fast-evolving world’ and in order to ‘ensure that all learners have the opportunity to become digitally capable individuals.’

This means that since 2020, all schools and kura are expected to deliver learning outcomes that align with the new curriculum adaptations in Digital Technologies (DT) for English-medium, and Hangarau Matihiko (HM) for Māori-medium.

Digital Technologies and Hangarau Matihiko is about helping students see their potential as creators of technology, not just users. Code Club resources are step-by-step guides that have been designed to familiarise students with the basic concepts of programming. These can be taught in the classroom or at a school code club.

What's Involved?

It's easy to start a club! Get your classroom coding with these simple steps:

Prepare:

Familiarise yourself with basic programming concepts by completing our projects designed specifically for teachers. We recommend following that up with Introduction to Scratch, which is what your students will start with. We have also developed a number of Aotearoa specific, classroom-ready resources for teachers and club leaders to use and you can read more about the process and responsibilities of hosting a club here

Police Check:

Not all school based clubs rely on the support of volunteers. However if you're considering it, make sure any adult outside your school joining the club has been police vetted by us. See our vetting guide for more info.

Set-up Your Club:

Register through our website, decide on the session time & day. You can run your club during school hours or as an after-school activity, it’s entirely up to you! Sessions will take an hour and session prep (devices, wifi, project instructions) around 15 minutes.
